Douglas Noël Adams (March 11, 1952, Cambridge, England – May 11, 2001, Santa Barbara, California, USA), also known (to fans) as Bop Ad or Bob (after his illegible signature), or by his initials "DNA", was a British comic radio dramatist and author, most notably of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (HHGG or H2G2). At the time of his death, this book series had sold more than fifteen million copies.

有关 speak 做名词, 比如:Transparency, management-speak for honesty,
透明度, 这是管理学上对诚实的说法(别名)

Not for the first time, Hu Jintao, the party's boss and China's president, rightly picks out two big problems: the widening gap between China's mostly urban rich and its mostly rural poor, and the party's lack of "internal democracy"--comrade-speak for accountability and the courage to question and debate.

Is 'speak' here used as a noun? Or is it used as a verb?

If it's a verb I don't get the meaning of 'comarde-speak for accountability ~~~'.

If it's a noun, is it common to use 'speak' as a noun?

Noun:

comrade-speak: it's the language/slang/talk that comrades use

>If it's a noun, is it common to use 'speak' as a noun?

Yes. Look in dictionaries.

Hi guys,

I wouldn't exactly say it's common. I seldom hear anyone say it. I read it in newspaper and magazine articles occasionally. It's always paired with another noun, with or without a hyphen, eg George Bush speak, liberal-speak. It usually sounds pejorative.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi, Clive.

My dictionary also says it's usually used in'-speak' form such as 'computerspeak' and it's disapproving expression as you mentioned.

Thank you.

Minds matter
精神问题

这是一个有趣的题目。
这里的matter 是动词还是名词?
如果是名词,当然是 精神问题, 心理问题, 思想问题。
如果是动词, 那就是精神、心理、思想 很重要。
这里的minds 用复数, matter没有s, 所以两种解释都通。
如果写成 Mind Matter 那就是名词了, 完不成文字游戏。
比如芝加哥有个小学生的课外活动项目, 名称叫 Afterschool Matters
这既可解释为 课后活动问题, 也可解释成 课后活动重要。
历史上精神物质孰先孰后的问题纷纷扰扰, 有人则认为这问题无关紧要。 并用了以下的妙语(是不是罗素?待查)
It does not matter. 物质不重要。
Never mind. 精神没关系。
这种妙处, 无法翻译的好。

中国版有篇文章 China and Confucius: Sage move? 中国和孔子
Sage move?
明智的移动?/圣像移动
貌似也有点双关。(说貌似是因为move没加s,更像是名词而非动词)这可能是TE一贯的手法。我是凭着直觉来的,即第一印象是啥就写上去了。

译者打字是不是有误?
是不是应该为“没有谎言的政治恐怕是最为有趣的。”

For the able-bodied, it could allow workers to dictate documents silently to computers simply by thinking about what they want to say.

好像在做坏事似的,版主要不要考虑:静静地?

Politics might be more entertaining without lies
没有谎言的政治可怕是最为有趣的。“
没有谎言的政治可能会有趣得多

but a party system would be hard to sustain without the semblance of loyalty that dishonesty permits
不过离开不诚实准许的表面忠诚,政党制度很难维持
可不可以这么说:如果不违心的假装忠诚,政党制度很难维持?

by the likes of Stephen Hawking 翻译成象霍金这类人使用的
那么 than 下面 is now possible even 是什么用法。。。

It would permit the profoundly handicapped—those paralysed by conditions such as motor-neuron disease and cerebral palsy—to communicate more easily than is now possible even with the text-based speech engines used by the likes of Stephen Hawking.

those paralysed by conditions such as motor-neuron disease and cerebral palsy修饰profoundly handicapped,可以先不管。

于是句子是

It would permit the profoundly handicapped to communicate more easily than is now possible even with the text-based speech engines used by the likes of Stephen Hawking.

个人感觉是个省略句,than 后面省略了which=the profoundly handicapped  who

=
It would permit the profoundly handicapped to communicate more easily than the profoundly handicapped  who is now possible even with the text-based speech engines used by the likes of Stephen Hawking.

最后一句个人比较偏向这个译法:一旦再失去精神隐私,我们就真的没有藏身之地了。
