President Joe Biden said America had “not yet verified” Russia’s claim that it is planning to withdraw some of its forces from the border with Ukraine. “An invasion remains distinctly possible,” he warned. Earlier Jen Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary general, said there was reason for “cautious optimism” that Russia would de-escalate tensions. On Tuesday cyberattacks took down the websites of several Ukrainian government ministries and two state banks. No culprit has yet been identified.

Prince Andrew reached a tentative settlement for an undisclosed amount with Virginia Giuffre, the woman who had accused him of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager. The deal will end a civil lawsuit against him in New York. The Duke of York has denied her allegations. He commended her “bravery” in a statement announcing the settlement.

The families of nine victims killed at a school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut in 2012 reached a settlement for $73m with the manufacturer of the rifle used in the shooting. Remington Arms, they alleged, broke the law by marketing a military-style weapon to civilians. The case’s focus on the firm’s advertising tactics marked a novel strategy, since gunmakers have broad legal immunity when their products are used to commit crimes.

Police in Honduras moved to arrest former president Juan Orlando Hernández after America issued a request for his extradition. Mr Hernández was president between 2014 and January this year. In 2021 his younger brother, Tony Hernández, was given a life sentence in America for drug trafficking. Evidence given at that trial, and a different one, accused JOH, as he is known, of taking money from drug cartels.

Ethiopia’s parliament voted to end the country’s state of emergency three months early, saying that the security situation had stabilised. Six months of emergency powers were imposed in November, when Tigrayan rebels threatened the capital, Addis Ababa. The government hopes the move will help the country’s economy. Aid agencies hope for better access to the millions who do not have enough to eat.

South Korea’s presidential candidates officially began campaigning ahead of the election in March. The race between the two main parties is expected to be very close. Of the 14 candidates, the frontrunners are Lee Jae-myung, of the ruling Democratic Party, and Yoon Seok-youl, of the conservative People Power Party. Roughly equal in the polls, neither is much liked by the public.

Novak Djokovic claimed not to be against vaccines but said he will not be forced to take the covid-19 jab. The world’s top-ranked men’s tennis player, who was deported from Australia last month amid controversy over his vaccination status, told the BBC that he “supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body” and would be willing to forgo future trophies.
