Biography
Chishimba Kasanga is a final year Journalism and Media Studies student at Rhodes University. Her Master's research investigates how Zambian women use social media (feminist Facebook pages) to challenge patriarchy and gender non-conformity in Zambia's heteronormative society. At Oxford, she hopes to further her studies into internet research, digital media, Facebook feminist work and gender. She wants to understand the role of social networking platforms in gender and identity formation and how online activism falls in the broader politics of unpaid digital labour. Chishimba is a Beit Scholar, and she currently serves as an official DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, and Safe) Ambassador for women and girls in Zambia. Before Rhodes, she worked as a Gender Coordinator, where she advocated for the fight against HIV/AIDS, promoting comprehensive Sexual Reproductive Health Rights education and gender equity.
