“19世纪德国哲学家亚瑟-叔本华写道:"读好书的前提是不读坏书:因为人生苦短。与叔本华的时代相比,现在人们的寿命更长,但书籍的数量却增加了很多。因此,他的论断现在应该比当时更有分量。

这位著名的悲观主义哲学家在发表这一论断时,表现出了非同寻常的乐观。他认为读者可以可靠地辨别哪些书值得花时间阅读,哪些不值得。这种信念已经消退。文学正典的概念受到了攻击。一些读者愿意撬开它,接纳更多女性和非白人作家的作品;另一些读者则会直接将它打入冷宫。评论家失去了文化影响力。拥有书评版的报纸数量也在减少。如今,似乎每个人都有自己的个人作品集。


然而,筛选的需求依然存在,以至于图书推荐似乎和他们推荐的书一样受欢迎。视频应用 TikTok 的图书角 BookTok 上的 “影响者 ”已经取代了过去有公信力的评委。在拥有数千万会员的 Goodreads 网站上,成千上万的读者对书籍进行评价和评论。Rebind是一款目前处于测试阶段的应用程序,它可以让经典书籍的读者利用人工智能向专家提问。经济学人》定期发布最佳图书榜单,以及关于特定主题的评论和推荐。

然而,人们被告知应该阅读的书籍数量之多似乎令人目不暇接。修剪的方法之一是查看最佳图书榜单的重叠之处,其理论依据是,出现频率最高的图书一定是真正值得一读的。一个名为thegreatestbooks.org的网站就是这样做的。该网站的创建者谢恩-谢尔曼(Shane Sherman)是得克萨斯州的一名计算机程序员,他利用 300 多份榜单列出了一份榜单,并不完全认真地称之为 “有史以来最伟大的书籍”(gboats)。它有 10,000 多本书,按照它们在组成榜单中出现的频率进行排名。您可以在下面搜索前 500 名,并按照出版年代或世纪、出版年份、语言和篇幅进行排序。


每年至少阅读一本书的美国人--超过半数的成年人--平均每年读完 11 本;因此,一个典型的读者需要 45 年多的时间才能读完这 500 本必读书。为了帮助读者合理安排时间,我们采用搜索引擎 howlongtoread.com 的联合创始人 Harry Tong 提供的估算值,列出了阅读这份书单上每本书所需的大致时间。(他使用有声读物的长度来计算默读这本书大概需要多少时间)。人们的阅读速度各不相同,有些书比其他书读起来慢:一个读书俱乐部花了28年才读完詹姆斯-乔伊斯(James Joyce)的《芬尼根的守灵夜》(排名第325位),而我们的数据显示,你可以在12个小时内读完这本书。


谢尔曼先生在 7 月 1 日的书单上排在最前面的书是《百年孤独》,这是一部魔幻现实主义的先驱作品。唐先生估计,读完这本书只需要7小时40分钟的独处时间,大约是一本gboat的平均水平。排名第二的《了不起的盖茨比》是一部描写美国爵士乐时代的长篇小说,应该只需要 2 小时 51 分钟。但排名第三的乔伊斯的《尤利西斯》(约在同一时期出版)则需要花费近 15 个小时。如果你像普通美国人一样每天花 15 分钟阅读,那么你需要花上两个月的时间,这对于一本只在一天内发生故事的书来说似乎是个厚颜无耻的要求。“如果你不沉迷于有趣的插图,读完《野兽在哪里》(第 421 期)只需要一分钟。不耐烦的读者可能会松一口气,因为长度与伟大之间并无关联(见图表 1)。


榜单的本质反映了一种文化共识。如果是这样的话,那么这种文化正在做出一些奇怪的选择。排名最高的非小说类书籍是但丁-阿利吉耶里的《神曲》,这是一部 14 世纪的诗歌,讲述了作者从地狱到炼狱再到天堂的旅程。它排在第 27 位。圣经》,作者 “未知”,排在第 34 位。“哈姆雷特》是莎士比亚六部作品中的第一部,排在第 83 位。莎士比亚戏剧汇编《第一对开本》排名第 126 位。

自 20 世纪初以来,大多数诗歌都是用英语写成的(见图 2)。文学指南针几乎指向西方。在《百年孤独》(故事发生地与作者的出生地哥伦比亚相似)之后,再也没有其他以全球南部为背景、由南部作家创作的作品问世,直到排名第50位的以尼日利亚为背景的历史小说《Things Fall Apart》。

除了《圣经》之外,排名第 60 位的第一本非小说类书籍是安妮-弗兰克(Anne Frank)的《少女日记》,她曾在阿姆斯特丹躲避纳粹,但被发现,1945 年在卑尔根-贝尔森(Bergen-Belsen)被杀害。在受欢迎的文学作品中,深刻性也能排在前列。“哈利-波特与魔法石》排名第134位,比希腊著名哲学家柏拉图的《共和国》高出8位。遗憾的是,叔本华没有进入前 500 名。

虽然谢尔曼先生主要是做统计工作,但他也做了一些老式的把关工作,主要是通过改变数据库中各榜单的权重。(他的调整看起来很合理。例如,他对只使用短时间内出版的图书的榜单进行减分。过于依赖非专家和来自单一地区的书单也会减分。谢尔曼先生还提出了一个更有选择性的 “全球文学典范”,规定每个国家只能有三本书入选,想象文学占80%(您可以在他的网站上更改其中一些权重)。


然而,渴望自我完善和娱乐的读者可能会向往 19 世纪式的规定性,即约翰-卢博克爵士的 “百本好书”(1887 年出版的一个版本)。卢博克被一位记者称为好书榜的 “教父”,他的精神在一些大学的好书课程大纲中得以延续。荷马、维吉尔和圣奥古斯丁出现在卢伯克的书单上,也出现在哥伦比亚学院新生必修的一门课程--《文学人文》的近期读物中。(他们也都是大船作家)。  

对叔本华来说,避开流行的东西是明智阅读的重要组成部分: “你应该记住,为傻瓜写作的人总能找到大批读者。对于 BookTok 这一代人来说,这句话可能过于教条。不过,文学学者、儿童文学作品《纳尼亚传奇》系列的作者 C.S. Lewis 更温和的建议值得借鉴: “读完一本新书后,除非中间读过一本旧书,否则绝不允许自己再读一本新书,这是一条好规则"。如果你读的主要是航海类书籍,那么你就有可能把时间花在刀刃上。
